I spend a lot of this site explaining how other things are built, so it only seems fair to show how this one is put together.
Build
It is a static site generated with Jekyll, written in HTML, Sass and a little vanilla JavaScript. Everything is Markdown underneath: pages, blog posts, project case studies and the phase-by-phase build histories are all Jekyll collections. Technical diagrams are drawn with Mermaid, self-hosted and loaded only on the pages that need them.
A few quiet plugins handle the plumbing – jekyll-feed for the Atom feed, jekyll-sitemap for the sitemap and jekyll-seo-tag for metadata and structured data.
Typography
Headings are set in Rubik, body text in Ubuntu. Both are self-hosted as WOFF2, so no request ever leaves for a third-party font service. Icons are inline SVG for the same reason.
Colour
A deep midnight blue (#2C3E50) does most of the work, with a single red accent (#DE4949) for emphasis – the same red threaded through the contribution graph and the section dividers.
Privacy
Analytics run on Umami: privacy-first, cookieless and light enough that there is no consent banner to dismiss. No third-party trackers, no advertising pixels.
Everything else is served from this domain. Fonts, icons and the diagram library are all self-hosted, so loading a page contacts no one but the host and the analytics endpoint – which keeps the list of processors in the privacy policy short and complete, rather than quietly longer than it says.
Hosting & deployment
Today everything runs on Cloudflare: the built site is served as static files from its edge, with DNS handled there too.
It did not start out that way. The original setup was entirely on Azure – infrastructure provisioned with Pulumi, an Azure DevOps pipeline building and pushing the site through staging and then to production, static hosting on Azure, and DNS managed in Azure as well. I moved everything to Cloudflare in 2026, when Azure Front Door became expensive for what is, after all, a static site.
Behind the scenes
The site began on the Made Jekyll theme and has been substantially rebuilt since – its own layouts, components, typography and styling.
